Greta Matassa: All This And Heaven Too — Origin Records (82393)
by George Evans, Planet Jazz Vol. 6 Winter/Spring 2003

A delightful surprise awaits those who seek out this wonderful release from Greta Matassa. Known principally in the American northwest, Greta reaches beyond the confines of her native Seattle here, and hopefully will become better known in the process. A true Working Girl of music, Greta has kept herself alive in the industry by singing every conceivable style over the years, but that has not diminished nor clouded her way with a standard, in fact it may have built in a deeper appreciation for rare songs such as the title track, and all the rest of this intelligently devised program. A bluesy yet tasteful stylist, Greta connects to the material here in a way that only a seasoned performer can. Recorded live at Bake's Place in Seattle, she is totally in the moment at every turn, with powerful musical and performance skills, and a heightened sense of drama that deepens as the program progresses. A brilliant recording and masterful effort by a relative unknown, hopefully about to break through to the next level. Go find this record.
