Greta Matassa
by Dick Crockett, Still Another Jazz Show, The Voice 88.7FM Sacramento

GRETA MATASSA begins the last segment with two classics from her new Favorites from a Long Walk CD. Greta's dynamics and phrasing are always distinctive and exciting as she has tremendous range. She has a powerful, whiskey voice able to explore her own dimension, keeping the great 20th-century singers in mind: Carmen McCrae, Sarah Vaughn and a bluesy sweetness of a Dakota Staton.

If you're in that territory of soul then you have lots of fans. We played "Double Rainbow" and "Listen Little Girl." This is after hours redux of smoke-filled closing timelessness. You're driving the Hollywood Freeway in your '57 Thunderbird convertible, doing your best impression of Mike Hammer with a blond sleeping on your shoulder, listening to the all night show. As the sun peeks over the horizon, Greta brings it home, real cozy and nice, like a Mickey Spillane character in a noir fantasy jazz, late night/early morning reformation. If you don't get it by now, then take the next bus back to Kansas, you're too sweet to be ruined by all this noir, kid, for Greta's giving us the real deal!
